Mesothelioma Types in California

California is one of the states in America that has been dealing with asbestos related diseases since the 1970’s. The number of reported cases each year has grown constantly since then, mostly because the latent period of several asbestos related diseases, such as mesothelioma and asbestosis.

How is mesothelioma caused?

Asbestos exposure is until now the only known and accepted cause of mesothelioma, all types of it. This type of cancer has been classified as an occupational disease, because most of the exposure occurrences are occupational.

The groups with the highest risk of mesothelioma cancer in California include ship workers and repair crews, plumbers, welders and construction workers, among others.

The types of mesothelioma

There are several types of mesothelioma that you should be aware of. These types are classified in 3 main types:

  • Epthelioid
  • Sarcomatoid
  • Mixed or Biphasic

These are types of malignant mesothelioma, the type that spreads and develops metastasis. There is also the benign type of mesothelioma, which experts see as a harmless type of disease. It does not spread, and it will not result in death.

The other types of mesothelioma include:

  • Pleural mesothelioma (mesothelioma of the pleura, the sac surrounding the chest cavity)
  • Peritoneal mesothelioma (mesothelioma of the peritoneum, the sac surrounding the abdominal cavity)
  • Pericardial mesothelioma (mesothelioma of the pericardium, the tissue surrounding the heart)

Each type of mesothelioma is similar because the cancer attacks the same type of cells. Other than that the development is different for each type. Pleural mesothelioma, for example, will exhibit different symptoms from peritoneal, and it usually also acts faster. Pericardial mesothelioma is even more difficult to treat because of the proximity to the heart.

Unfortunately, all above mentioned types of mesothelioma are deadly, apart from the benign type, which can be cured. All of these types are caused by the same mineral, asbestos, and when the diseases starts, all of them have similar symptoms.

In California, there have been reported cases of each of these types of mesothelioma, but the most common is pleural, with over 45 percent of all recorded cases. Pleural mesothelioma is very common between construction workers and plumbers, because they are exposed to airborne asbestos fibers, and they will inhale them rather than swallow.
