Mesothelioma symptoms and California residents

When exposed to asbestos for a long period of time, a person will start exhibiting some symptoms, usually associated with breathing disorders, because the tiny fibers attack tissue around the pleural cavity and the lungs’ normal expansion and contraction movements will be obstructed.

Symptoms of mesothelioma

Mesothelioma patients exhibit similar symptoms regardless of the type of mesothelioma they are suffering from. There are only a few noticeable differences, the major being the severity of the symptoms. Here the most common symptoms:

  • Extreme pain in the chest area, due to pleural effusion (the build-up of fluid)
  • Trouble breathing (shortness of breath occurs with normal daily routine)
  • A permanent state of fatigue and illness
  • Trouble swallowing
  • The patient is not able to get enough sleep
  • Dry cough, will not go away with normal treatment

Cause of mesothelioma

Pleural, pericardial and malignant mesothelioma is caused by the same asbestos mineral. Even small doses will cause health problems, and after the first symptoms are obvious, the mesothelioma doctor will perform diagnosis procedures and start treatment as soon as possible. Before starting treatment the disease requires mesothelioma clinical trials in order for the doctor to choose the appropriate treatment. Basic mesothelioma treatment methods used are similar to those of any other type of cancer.

Malignant mesothelioma symptoms

Symptoms of malignant mesothelioma are often times confused with those of other illnesses. These are some of the most common:

  • Chest pain
  • Dry cough
  • Shortness of breath

Pleural mesothelioma symptoms

Pleural mesothelioma is the cancer of the pleura, a type of malignant mesothelioma, meaning that it will have similar symptoms:

  • Pain in the thoracic area
  • Permanent state of illness
  • Shortness of breath

Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms

As the name suggests, this is mesothelioma of the peritoneum, again, a type of malignant mesothelioma. These are the common symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma:

  • Swelling in the abdominal region
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Pain in the abdomen

Benign mesothelioma symptoms

This is the non-lethal type of mesothelioma, symptoms being mostly unnoticed by the patient. When they are present, they include:

  • Chronic, dry cough
  • Chest pain (in the case of pleural benign mesothelioma)
  • Shortness breath without any obvious reason

Asbestosis mesothelioma symptoms

This is a disease very similar to malignant types of mesothelioma, and thus, it has very similar symptoms:

  • Tightness in the chest
  • Pain due to pleural effusion
  • Constant cough that can’t be cured with common treatment

Pericardial mesothelioma symptoms

Mesothelioma of the pericardium, it usually exhibits the following symptoms:

  • Irregular heart beat (the cancer is surrounding the hearts’ lining)
  • Breathing becomes heavy
  • Dry cough
