Renovated California Theater to becoming asbestos-free

The local theater in Downey, California, will undergo renovations in late July and reopen in August with a spanking new look. More important, it will conform to OSHA regulations regarding removal of the old, asbestos containing, fireproofing material and insulation and introduction of new HVAC systems. This is a matter of public concern, and certainly high time that the 738-seat Downey Theater upgrades its fittings from when it was first built in 1971.

Brian Ragland, the Public Works Director, reiterated the sentiment and stressed the high cost of running the place owing to phenomenal energy consumption and constant need for maintenance and repairs.

Moreover, it is well-known that inhalation of the tiny asbestos fibers can lead to the rare cancer, mesothelioma, existing almost 3,000 American asbestos claims each year. There is no cure for the malady and it is highly aggressive in that the patient succumbs within a short period after diagnosis.

According to local reports, it will cost $28,730 to remove the asbestos from the building, and that is money well spent by the federal Department of Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant in the interest of public health. The project will be supervised by CF Environmental Inc., a company that has successfully handled similar projects in the past.
