Inadequate Asbestos Training Lands Trainer in Trouble

The owner of E&D Environmental Safety Training Inc., Rogelio Lowe, has admitted to issuing fake training certificates to asbestos workers. The San Francisco Appeal reports that on Thursday, Lowe, of Thornton, California, pleaded guilty in federal court to two counts of mail fraud.

Between 2007 and 2009, Lowe admits that he provided certificates to students without giving them sufficient training in handling asbestos and other hazardous materials. The required numbers of hours to teach the courses were not fulfilled. In addition, he administered tests and provided forged test results to the students. What is worse, the students or their employers paid him up to $600 each for the course.

Asbestos is a mineral that poses a fatal health risk if ingested when its fine particles are floating freely in the air. After a long gestation period, it is known to manifest many diseases, including mesothelioma, a type of cancer that commonly affects the internal linings of the lung, heart, and abdominal cavities. And there is no cure for the malady to date.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White will sentence Lowe on December 2; meanwhile, he has been released on a $50,000 bond and his license to provide asbestos training in California and elsewhere is suspended.
