A group of teens being trained in construction by a now-closed non-profit agency in Merced called Firm Build may be at risk of developing mesothelioma from asbestos exposure during the training. Three California executives of Firm Build have been charged with child endangerment for the careless act that has made the teens susceptible to asbestos related diseases, including mesothelioma cancer
According to the Merced County District Attorney’s Office, the teens were sent by these executives in 2005 – 2006 to remove asbestos-containing products from old buildings. For this, they were only provided paper facemasks and hard hats that were not adequate protection for the dangerous task, reports Silicon Valley Mercury News. The disease has a long latency period, and it is not possible to ascertain the effect of the exposure at present.
Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma, as well as asbestosis, lung cancer and other serious pulmonary problems. A large number of buildings exist that belong to the period when asbestos was a favored material for use in building construction owing to its low cost and fire retardant properties. Strict guidelines have been mandated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission for the type of protection required for asbestos removal, such as protective gear and respirators.
According to the Environmental Working Group, California has the largest number of asbestos-related deaths of any state because of the many state industries that used asbestos, such as shipyards, oil refineries, and power plants.
