OTHER ASBESTOS EXPOSURE SOURCES:

California Asbestos Ceiling

Asbestos ceilings are common in houses along the State of California. This type of tiles has been used mainly because it provides with additional insulation, besides the one that should be present in the roof. Asbestos in ceiling tiles also provides with additional durability to the material.

Asbestos ceiling removal in California

Asbestos ceiling tiles are required by law to be removed from any house that undergoes renovation works or demolition. Asbestos fibers and waste will be disposed of properly and certain techniques should be used during the asbestos removal process, as follows:

  • Walls and flooring should be covered with wet rags that can easily absorb asbestos fibers
  • Asbestos-free duct tape should be used in order to clearly limit the containment area
  • While removing popcorn asbestos ceilings asbestos workers should replace them with spray on asbestos free tiles
  • Any kind of board, panel or insulation material will also be removed if containing asbestos

Popcorn asbestos ceilings risks

The reason for which the textured popcorn ceiling tiles were used so often is that they were also seen as acoustic tiles. It is harder to remove because it was applied in a spray-on method and this makes the tiles difficult to remove in a single piece. Respirators are required during this operation, and because of the poly sheeting found in some homes, it would be wise to remove those as well.

As well as removing asbestos ceiling tiles and replacing them with non asbestos ones, you could be removing all the asbestos in your house because it could prove more cost effective to do it all at once, as well as less time consuming.

Unfortunately, the state of California still has a lot of houses that contain at least one type of asbestos containing materials. The government officials have done much to improve on this, but the results have yet to be seen. California asbestos experts expect that in the following year another 3000 houses will be tested against asbestos, and if any type of asbestos material is found, the owner will have to pay for the removal of those items. This sounds like a drastic measure, but concerning the severe diseases caused by this mineral, it is a small price to pay.
